When conventional internet service isn't readily available at a new construction site, a general contractor should evaluate alternatives based on three factors: required throughput, reliability, and cost. Depending on the location, the best solution might be cellular/wireless service, Starlink, an arrangement with a neighboring property, or another temporary connection.

- Survey the Jobsite Before Assuming Internet Isn't Available
When someone says, “We can't get internet at the new jobsite,” the first question should be:
What does “can't get internet” actually mean?
Sometimes it means no conventional provider services the address.
Other times, service exists nearby but getting it into the temporary trailer is the challenge.
Or perhaps an ISP can provide service, but not before the field team needs to mobilize.
Those are different problems requiring different solutions.
Before choosing technology, determine:
- Where the trailer will be located
- What utilities are already present
- What internet providers serve the surrounding area
- Whether service exists elsewhere on the property
- Whether neighboring buildings have connectivity
- What cellular coverage is available
- Whether satellite service is practical
- When conventional service could be installed
- How long the project will last
Don't limit the investigation to:
“Can the ISP install a modem at this exact trailer address today?”
The physical realities of a construction site often require more creativity.
- Determine What the Jobsite Actually Needs
Before comparing internet options, define the requirements.
A trailer used by two employees primarily for email has different needs from a busy project office where employees regularly:
- Access Procore
- Retrieve Bluebeam drawings
- Work with Autodesk platforms
- Use Microsoft Teams
- Access SharePoint
- Upload jobsite photos
- Submit daily reports
- Download large project files
- Participate in video meetings
- Access company systems remotely
That's why Fairoaks evaluates jobsite internet using three criteria:

Throughput
How much data needs to move through the connection?
Consider both downloads and uploads.
Uploading large batches of jobsite photos or project information can be just as important as downloading information from the office.
Reliability
How consistently does the connection need to work?
An impressive speed test isn't particularly useful if the connection repeatedly drops during the workday.
Cost
Once you've identified solutions capable of meeting the operational requirements, compare their cost.
The cheapest connection isn't necessarily the least expensive solution if unreliable service repeatedly prevents employees from working.
Likewise, there's no reason to buy a more expensive solution than the project actually requires.
Fit the connection to the job.
- Evaluate Multiple Connectivity Options
When conventional wired service isn't immediately available, don't assume the project has to operate without reliable connectivity.
Several alternatives may be worth investigating.
Cellular or Wireless Internet
Depending on coverage at the site, cellular or wireless service may provide a practical temporary—or sometimes longer-term—connection.
The important question isn't simply whether a phone shows several bars.
The connection needs to support the actual workload of the trailer.
Test it based on what employees need to do.
Starlink
Satellite internet can be another option when conventional wired service isn't practical.
Again, don't select it simply because it's available.
Evaluate the jobsite, installation requirements, performance needs, reliability, and cost.
Nearby Buildings or Businesses
Sometimes the solution is physically close to the construction site.
Fairoaks has worked with neighboring businesses to gain access to a utility closet or arrange connectivity when appropriate.
Any such arrangement should be properly authorized and professionally configured.
The lesson isn't “borrow the neighbor's Wi-Fi.”
It's that a construction IT provider should examine the environment rather than assuming the only possible solution is a conventional installation directly inside the trailer.
Temporary Utility Infrastructure
Fairoaks has mounted Comcast or Verizon equipment on temporary jobsite telephone poles to solve connectivity challenges.
That's a good example of why construction experience matters.
The service may technically be available—but the challenge is figuring out how to deliver it to a temporary construction environment.

The internet connection may vary from project to project.

Power can be a problem too.
Construction-trailer power can be notoriously unreliable.

The purpose isn't necessarily to keep the trailer operating through an extended power outage.
It's to provide protection for critical networking equipment and reduce the impact of short interruptions or unstable power conditions.
Otherwise, a contractor can spend considerable effort establishing internet connectivity only to have the network disrupted by the trailer's electrical environment.
Connectivity planning needs to consider both:

- Have a Backup Plan When Connectivity Is Business-Critical
The importance of backup connectivity depends on how heavily the jobsite relies on its internet connection.
Ask:
“What happens operationally if this connection goes down?”
If the answer is little more than “email will be inconvenient,” the company may accept a different level of risk.
If losing the connection prevents a field team from accessing critical project information, uploading reports, communicating with the office, or performing other important tasks, the contractor should consider whether an alternate connectivity option is warranted.
The decision should be based on business impact.
Use this framework:
Likelihood of Failure × Operational Impact = Need for Resiliency
You don't necessarily need two of everything.
You do need to understand what happens when the primary connection fails.
- Monitor and Support the Connection After Deployment
Installing the internet connection isn't the end of the project.
The environment needs to be supported.
Document:
- Which provider or technology is being used
- What equipment is installed
- How the network is configured
- Where critical equipment is located
- Any unusual site-specific setup
- Who to contact when something stops working
This becomes particularly important for contractors with multiple simultaneous projects.
Without documentation, every support problem starts with:
“What did we install at this trailer again?”
With standardization and documentation, troubleshooting can start much further ahead.
And when an employee reports a problem, the IT provider should be able to investigate the entire connection—from the employee's device through the jobsite network and out to the internet service.

If conventional internet isn't readily available, work through these questions:
- What internet providers service the surrounding area?
- Is wired service available somewhere else on the property?
- When can conventional service actually be installed?
- What cellular or wireless options are available?
- Is Starlink practical at this location?
- Are there nearby facilities that create another authorized connectivity option?
- How much download and upload capacity does the field actually need?
- How damaging would an internet outage be to jobsite operations?
- Does the networking equipment have appropriate power protection?
- Who will monitor and troubleshoot the connection after it's installed?
Answer those questions before deciding the site has “no internet.”
What Is the Best Internet Option for a Construction Jobsite?
There isn't one.
That's the most important answer.

The right answer depends on the location.
