Local managed IT in Massachusetts and Rhode Island
Who provides managed IT services in Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island?
Fairoaks IT provides managed IT services and cybersecurity for small and midsize businesses across Greater Boston, MetroWest, Worcester County, the South Shore and Rhode Island from our office in Franklin, MA. We’ve been independent and owner-led since 1991, we won the Soteria Award for Most Trusted MSP in North America, and our average time to start on a support issue is under 12 minutes.
Do you provide onsite IT support in Rhode Island?
Yes. Our Franklin office is close to the Rhode Island line, so businesses in Providence, Pawtucket, Cranston, Warwick, Lincoln and Woonsocket are a short drive away. Most issues are solved remotely in minutes, and when something needs hands on it, we send a technician.
Can you support a business with offices in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island?
Yes. Multi-office businesses get the same standards everywhere: the same network design, security tools, documentation and support team. What changes is the state law. Massachusetts and Rhode Island each have their own rules for protecting employee and customer information, and we help you meet both.
Why choose a local managed IT provider over a national one?
Because some problems need someone who can show up. A local, owner-led provider can get a technician into your office when remote support isn’t enough, and gives you the same team every time instead of a different voice on every call. You can also reach the owners when it matters.
Where is Fairoaks IT’s Massachusetts office?
Our Massachusetts office is at 1000 Franklin Village Dr, Suite 303, Franklin, MA 02038, between Boston, Worcester and Providence. It serves businesses across Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Give us a call or schedule a discovery call below.
Massachusetts and Rhode Island rules and conditions
Does Massachusetts 201 CMR 17.00 apply to my business?
If you hold personal information about Massachusetts residents, almost certainly. 201 CMR 17.00 applies to any business that owns or licenses that information, including employee records, so most Massachusetts employers are covered. It requires a written information security program and specific safeguards, including encrypting that information on laptops and when it travels over public networks or Wi-Fi. Your attorney has the final word on how it applies to you.
What should a Massachusetts written information security program include?
201 CMR 17.00 spells out the core pieces: someone responsible for the program, a review of risks to personal information, employee training, access limited to the people who need it, rules for records that leave the office, prompt removal of access when employees leave, oversight of vendors that handle the data, and a review at least once a year. We help clients put the technical controls in place and keep the documentation current.
What happens if a Massachusetts business has a data breach?
Massachusetts law requires you to notify affected residents, the Attorney General’s office and the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation as soon as practicable and without unreasonable delay. Industry rules can add their own requirements on top of that. The time to write your response plan is before you need it, and the first call after a suspected breach should be to your attorney and your IT provider.
What does Rhode Island require if my business holds personal information?
Rhode Island’s Identity Theft Protection Act requires businesses that hold personal information about Rhode Island residents to maintain a risk-based information security program with reasonable security procedures, along with sensible retention and secure destruction of records. After a breach, affected residents must be notified within 45 calendar days of confirming it, and the Attorney General must be notified when more than 500 Rhode Islanders are affected. Your attorney can confirm what applies to you.
How do we keep the business running through New England storms?
Plan before the storm. Nor’easters and summer thunderstorms knock out power, so put servers and network equipment on battery backup with time to shut down cleanly, keep a backup internet connection if the office has to stay open, and make sure your team can work securely from home with company laptops and multi-factor authentication. Remote monitoring tells us when an office goes dark, often before your team notices.
What our clients say
“Prior to working with Fairoaks IT, we would have to wait until after hours or even days to get a response when we needed assistance with our technology. That all changed when Fairoaks IT took over our network. Our systems, which always seemed to be outdated, are now being constantly monitored, and we always have whatever resources we need… Tom himself demonstrates the principles that he asks his team to follow.”
“One of the biggest differences from what we had before Fairoaks IT, is the fact that we call one person to manage everything IT related… Our employees now have one number to call.”
William ShannonShannon Corporation“I can sleep at night knowing that Fairoaks IT is diligent in ensuring the safety of my systems… whenever I call, someone always answers the phone live.”
