Local support for Charlotte-area contractors
Who provides IT support for construction companies in Charlotte?
Fairoaks IT provides managed IT and cybersecurity for construction companies across the Charlotte metro from our office in Belmont, NC, just west of Charlotte in Gaston County. We’ve been independent and owner-led since 1991, we won the Soteria Award for Most Trusted MSP in North America, and founder and president Tom Crossley leads our construction work. We support general contractors, construction managers, specialty contractors and restoration firms.
Do you provide onsite IT support in Gastonia, Concord, Huntersville, Monroe, Rock Hill and Fort Mill?
Yes. Our Belmont office serves construction companies across Mecklenburg, Gaston, Cabarrus and Union counties and York County, South Carolina. Most job site issues are solved remotely through our proprietary trailer setup and remote monitoring, and when something needs hands on it, we send a technician.
We’ve never worked with an IT company before. What should we expect?
A conversation first, not a contract. A lot of growing contractors have relied on a part-time IT person or the office’s most tech-savvy employee, and that works until it doesn’t. We start with a discovery call, then an assessment that shows where your technology stands in plain English, then a plan with every cost explained up front. Your agreement spells out exactly what’s included, and we’ll walk you through every page before you sign.
Our company is growing fast. When should we move from a part-time IT person to managed IT?
Usually sooner than people think. Common signs: 10 or more people on computers every day, job sites being added faster than your IT can keep up, the same problems coming back, insurance questions about security you can’t answer, or everything depending on one person who’s hard to reach. If you already have an IT person you like, co-managed IT gives them a team to lean on instead of replacing them.
Can you support job sites on both sides of the North Carolina and South Carolina line?
Yes. Many Charlotte-area contractors have jobs in Rock Hill, Fort Mill and the rest of York County, and the IT should work the same way on both sides of the line. Every site gets the same trailer setup, the same security and the same support team. The data rules do differ, since each state’s breach law covers its own residents, so we help you plan for both.
Where is Fairoaks IT’s Charlotte-area office?
Our Charlotte-area office is at 32 North Main Street, Suite 206, Belmont, NC 28012, just west of Charlotte in Gaston County. It serves construction companies across the Charlotte metro, including Gastonia, Concord, Huntersville, Monroe, Rock Hill and Fort Mill. Give us a call or schedule a discovery call below.
North Carolina rules and job site conditions
What does North Carolina law require if a construction company has a data breach?
North Carolina’s Identity Theft Protection Act requires any business that owns or licenses personal information about North Carolina residents to notify affected people without unreasonable delay after a breach. When you notify residents, you must also notify the Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General’s Office, and the national consumer reporting agencies if more than 1,000 people are notified at once. For a contractor, that personal information includes employee Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers and bank details. Your attorney has the final word.
What if we have employees or customers in South Carolina?
Plan for South Carolina’s rules too. South Carolina has its own data breach notification law covering its residents, so a contractor with employees in Rock Hill or Fort Mill can have obligations in both states after the same incident. The practical protection is the same either way: limit who can access employee records, encrypt laptops, use multi-factor authentication and have a response plan before you need one.
Do construction companies in North Carolina need cyber insurance?
No state law requires it, but some project owners, general contractors and lenders ask for proof of coverage, and carriers require specific controls before they’ll write or renew a policy: multi-factor authentication, endpoint protection, tested backups and staff training. Make sure the answers on your application are true, and let your insurance agent confirm what your contracts require.
How do we protect job site trailer equipment from Carolina heat and summer storms?
Plan for heat, surges and outages. Trailer interiors get hot, so keep network gear out of direct sun, in a ventilated spot and off the floor. Put it on surge protection and a battery backup, since thunderstorms and temporary power are hard on electronics. A backup internet connection keeps the site working when a storm takes out the primary line, and remote monitoring tells us when a trailer goes dark.
What should we plan for IT when opening a new office or yard in the Charlotte area?
Start early, because internet installation usually takes the longest. Order service as soon as you have a lease, plan network cabling, Wi-Fi, phones, cameras and access control before the walls close, and make sure the new location connects securely to your main office and cloud systems. We help clients plan buildouts so the new space works the day people move in.
