Cheers to the new year! Out with the old, in with the new!
It’s been a decade since the launch of Windows 7. After January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer offer security updates or technical support for computers running Windows 7 without charging you a fee to extend support for up to two years. While your computer will still function after that date, you will need to start taking the steps to get your computer up to Windows 10. Without the continued software and security updates, your computer will be at greater risk for viruses and malware. Here’s how to get started with the upgrade:
- Select which version of Windows 10 is right for you. There are currently six editions available: Home, Pro, Pro Education, Education, Pro for Workstations, and Enterprise. See Microsoft.com for pricing and comparison details.
- Check out the latest PCs. This is a great time to update your hardware and take advantage of the modern technology such as solid-state drives, improved durability, and batteries that last longer. Any PC that was purchased in 2014 or prior, we highly recommend that you purchase a new device with Windows 10 already on it.
- Back up your files and photos. Have you heard about OneDrive? OneDrive makes it easy to back up and restore your data. Simply go to portal.office.com and register for a Microsoft account to download. A free OneDrive basic account offers 5 GB of storage. There are plans available if you need more storage. Once installed, you can use it to backup your files to the cloud. Then, login to OneDrive on your new PC and run the sync. It’s that easy!
Windows 10 was initially released on July 29, 2015 and it is here to stay. Microsoft will continue to release incremental updates to keep it current, but for the foreseeable future, the name will remain Windows 10. Microsoft's approach is to keeps the same platform, but to roll out updates to apps, software, and security. Windows 10 offers you the choice of when and how to get the latest updates. Go to the Search box and type in Windows Updates to make your selections.
Let’s talk security. Windows 10 is the most secure Windows ever built, with comprehensive end-to-end security that covers antivirus, firewall, internet protections and more. Microsoft helps keep your data secure. All security options are available by going to the Search box, and type in Security. By default, all these security measures are turned on.
