In today’s day of smartphones it’s easy to get carried away with streaming music or video on the go. Here are some tips to reduce your data overage and hopefully reduce your monthly bill!

Use Wi-Fi whenever possible.

Many businesses offer free Wi-Fi hotspots for customers to bring in business. There are applications such as Wi-Fi Finder for both Android and iPhone that can help you find a location near you.

Track your data as well as set alerts and limits.

iOS 7 and above allows you to track cellular data usage under Settings > Cellular and see a list of apps which use data. You can turn off items that are not essential and track your monthly usage.

Android has a multitude of options under Settings > Wireless & Networks > Data usage. You can restrict the background data of an app, set a data alert when you get to a set amount, and set a limit on your overall data usage.

JenHere are a few more quick tips:

Download what you want to read at home or over Wi-Fi.

Get rid of ads. Opt for ad-free versions of apps you use or turn airplane mode on before using an application.

Disable data while driving/roaming.

Disable or reduce frequency of mail/contacts/calendar sync.
